4th Grade Reading
This year we'll be doing a variety of things. Here is a list of some of the things your child will be doing:

September/October:
- Jacob's Ladder pre-assessment to determine needs
- Writing pre-assessment to determine needs
- Solving mysteries using deductive thinking and logic. Discuss ideas and use details to support responses.
- Jacob's Ladder (see link above) activities with fables
November:
- Complete finding morals in fables and creating their own fable to teach a particular moral of their choice.
- Geography - students will: learn to distinguish between a town, city, county, state, country, continent; learn what culture is; do a general look at cultures of different continents; choose a particular country to research their culture and create a presentation showing what they learned; understand why its important to know about and be considerate of various cultures.
December:
Continue geography
January & February:
Students choose a country of their choice, research it, and take notes on three aspects of culture. We will take these notes and turn it into a report by learning about the structure of paragraphs (main idea with supporting details and information) and essays (introductory paragraph, body, and concluding paragraph).
March:
Creative Thinking Unit: teaching, using, and developing originality, fluency (lots of ideas), flexibility (different categories and groups, a variety of ideas), and elaboration (details and expanding on thoughts).
April:

4th Grade Math
September:
Place value challenge (look for in Tuesday folder)
Million challenge (look for in Tuesday folder)
October:
Fair Factors - factors, multiples, and least common multiples
November:
Planning a road trip with multiplication and division of larger numbers
December:
problem solving with strategies - use or make a table or list and look for patterns
January
Parts of a circle (circumference, diameter, radius, chord)
Dividing circumference by diameter to find Pi
Pi study and activities (see link below)
February
Area and Perimeter with creating a zoo exhibit (problem solving incorporated throughout)
March
Algebra: using the "language of algebra" by writing expressions and equations, and how to solve equations with a variable (an unknown number)
April
Patterns with Fibonacci and Pascal's Triangle (link below for more info)
